The Jewish Federation of Detroit, a leading philanthropic organization serving the metro-Detroit community is seeking an experienced and dynamic senior HR professional to lead the HR team, shape a thriving and engaged workforce while driving our organizational success. The Senior Director, Human Resources will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of HR operations and fostering a positive and productive work environment. This role requires exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, and hands-on expertise in HR practices. Responsibilities include employee relations, talent acquisition/retention, professional development, performance management, compensation and benefits administration, 403(b) administration, and other HR policies and practices. This position will supervise a team of 3 HR professionals and support a staff of 100 Federation employees.

• Recruit and retain top talent, and direct hiring, onboarding, and succession planning.
• Recommend and execute staffing decisions, including layoffs, transfers, and promotions.
• Design and manage competitive compensation and benefits programs that attract and retain top talent.
• Administer an ERISA 403(b) Plan covering 7 agencies with over $30M in assets.
• Works closely with management to drive staff excellence, improve employee morale, and build highly effective teams.
• Oversee performance management processes, including goal setting, performance evaluations, and development plans.
• Identify professional development needs, design training programs, and facilitate learning opportunities to enhance employee skills and career growth.
• Provide ongoing and proactive coaching for employees and managers.
• Address employee relations issues and resolve problems to ensure a fair and respectful work environment.
• Ensure compliance with local, state and federal regulations and labor laws. Work with legal counsel and senior leadership to ensure legal compliance and mitigate risk.
• Develop, implement, and update HR policies, procedures and employee handbook.
• Champion diversity and inclusion initiatives, promoting a diverse workforce and an inclusive work culture.
• Act as HR consultant to Federation’s partner agencies.
Requirements and Skills:
• Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field. Master’s degree is a plus. HR Certification (SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, PHR) is a plus.
• Minimum of 10 years of progressive HR experience, with 5 years in a managerial or leadership role.
• Strong leadership and people management skills, with the ability to inspire and lead a team to achieve goals.
• Proven ability to think strategically, align HR practices with business objectives, and drive organizational transformation.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with employees, managers, and leadership.
• Adept at analyzing complex situations, identifying issues, and developing effective, creative solutions.
• Experience in managing change and guiding employees through transitions.
• In-depth knowledge of employment laws and regulations to ensure HR practices are compliant.
• Ability to collaborate across departments and work effectively in a team environment.
• Proficient in using HR software, tools, and systems for data analysis, reporting, and talent management.
• Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence to handle sensitive employee matters.
