General Summary

Fresh Air Society, d/b/a Tamarack Camps (“Tamarack”), is an independent community-based agency affiliated with the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.

Tamarack offers a wide variety of camping services, both in the summer and year-round, for Jewish families, children with special needs, and community organizations. Tamarack’s primary program is its overnight summer camp; Camp Maas in Ortonville, MI. With over 1,000 wooded acres that includes two lakes, Camp Maas offers unique camping experiences to over 1,000 campers each summer, and thousands of school children in the off-season. Tamarack also operates teen outpost camps in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and in Wawa, Ontario. Teen Travel programs provide trips to the western United States and to Alaska. The culminating Tamarack camp experience is a leadership teen mission to Israel. Tamarack also operates a retreat and conference center in Ortonville, adjacent to Camp Maas, serving schools, corporate clients, and community organizations year-round.

Authority and Accountability

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will provide vision and direction for the organization, while also managing all aspects of agency operations. The CEO will oversee an annual $9 million budget and an $8 million endowment. The CEO reports directly to the agency President and Executive Committee, and is generally accountable to the Board of Directors.

The CEO has authority to:

·       Manage, direct, and administer camp operations and initiatives

·       Hire and develop top talent

·       Establish procedures consistent with agency policies, rules and directives

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Collaborate with, and assist, the Board of Directors in overall strategic planning, including creating an annual operating plan to implement defined goals and objectives.

Work with the Board to identify and address the agency’s priority issues for meeting its programming, personnel, facility, financial, and fundraising needs.

Supervise and organize the agency’s administrative and management teams with regard to staff and camper:  recruitment, training, evaluation, and retention.

Oversee Tamarack’s programs to assure the highest quality delivery of Jewish educational and recreational content.

Monitor ongoing facility operations, within the scope of the Master Plan, including identifying areas of need and improvement.

Oversee budget planning and execution to ensure that the agency continually operates within the Board approved budget.

Assist leadership in developing and implementing the agency’s annual fundraising plans focusing on building the camp’s endowment.

Develop and cultivate Board leadership in a manner consistent with advancing the agency’s mission.

Promote positive relationships with campers, their families, alumni, donors, and organizations in the broader Jewish community.

Desired Job Qualifications  

  • Minimum educational requirement:  Bachelor’s degree
  • A minimum of 5 years leadership experience, preferably in a camp setting, including a minimum of 3 years in a managerial or supervisory role.
  • Expertise and business acumen in Jewish camping and camp management.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and demonstrated team-building skills.
  • Experience in Board development and management.
  • Proven fundraising skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with community, lay and religious leaders, children, their parents, and families.
  • An understanding of finance and responsible financial practices, and a demonstrated ability to operate within a budget.
  •  Excellent professional demeanor.
  •  Personal and professional commitment to Jewish camping and the Jewish community.
  •  Deep love and connection to the Jewish people, Jewish life, and Jewish values.
